‘Competitors in the surf-riding contest’: battle as theme in the first three surf novels

چکیده
In surf fiction it is common for wave-riders to be tested. The test of self – battling against nature, others, and one’s own capabilities a popular thematic pathway discovery, growth freedom, as manifested regularly in surf-related since its beginnings 1849. This paper looks at the first three novels that featured surfing Mardi Voyage Thither (Melville, 1849), Coral Island: A Tale Pacific Ocean (Ballantyne, 1857), Kelea: Surf-Rider, Romance Pagan Hawaii (Twombly, 1900) examine why authors wrote about conjunction with themes battle contest.
